The Importance of Child's Pose

What It Is
Child’s pose is a yoga or static stretch that allows for a passive lengthening across various joints from a prone position on the mat.

Why It’s Important

It Targets Posture Muscles
Child’s pose allows for a gentle stretch of important posture stabilizers including shoulders, low back, thighs, and hips. By targeting these areas the stretch will lengthen muscles and increase elasticity (across the joint) allowing you to maintain proper posture.

It’s A Stress Relieving Pose
By allowing the floor to passively stretch your muscles you can find a position in child’s pose that you will be able to hold for longer than active dynamic poses. Being able to do a passive stretch for longer provides you an opportunity to concentrate on your breathing and relaxation of muscles you may be tensing up.

To perform a bodyweight counterweight squat you will only need yourself and a mat. Kneel on all fours on mat; bend knees; and allow big toes to touch. Sit back on your heels and lean your torso forward onto the tops of you legs. Reach your arms forward with palms down; place your forehead on mat or yoga block.

Modify It
If you are unable to get up and down off the ground or have limited flexion through your knee joint try a wall hip hinge stretch. The wall will provide the passive stretch from a standing position to allow for similar benefits of child’s pose.

Power It Up
Power up with a wide leg child’s pose variation. By placing your legs wider you will be able to press into a deeper stretch with your shoulders, armpits, and inner thighs. Also power up your child's pose with a shoulder reach through variation by crossing one arm under the other arm while remaining in child's pose.
